China eSIM vs roaming

You need data on day one for maps, DiDi, translation and ticket QR codes. Roaming from some home carriers works; a travel eSIM is often cheaper and avoids surprise bills. If you must receive Chinese SMS codes for WeChat bookings, a data-only eSIM is not enough — read the product FAQ carefully.

Setup checklist

  1. Confirm your phone is eSIM unlocked and not carrier-locked.
  2. Install the eSIM on home Wi-Fi; keep your home SIM for SMS from your bank.
  3. On landing, enable the eSIM line for data; leave roaming off on the home line unless you intend to pay for it.
  4. Test maps, DiDi and WhatsApp before you leave the airport Wi-Fi bubble.

Cost reality

Airalo’s China plans (China Unicom network) are commonly listed from a few USD for 1 GB / few days up to larger 15–30 day packs — prices move, so check the live catalog. Roaming day passes from US/EU carriers are often more expensive for heavy map use.

We may earn a commission if you buy through the Airalo link above (Travelpayouts). That does not change the price you pay. Official attraction tickets should still be bought on the channels in our guides.

Pitfalls: Buying data-only eSIM then failing WeChat SMS at 20:00. Deleting the eSIM QR before it activates. Relying on free airport Wi-Fi alone for a Forbidden City release night.

FAQ

Will an Airalo China eSIM bypass the Great Firewall?

Many travel eSIMs for China advertise open access to Google/WhatsApp/Instagram. That depends on the provider’s routing — confirm in the current product description. WhatsApp calling still works for many visitors on hotel Wi-Fi even when cellular is restricted.

Can eSIM receive +86 SMS?

Often no. Most tourist eSIMs are data-only. For WeChat attraction SMS, prefer hotel-desk help or a physical China tourist SIM that explicitly includes SMS — see our SMS guide.

When is roaming better?

Short layover, corporate phone with a known China roaming plan, or if your device cannot install eSIMs. Check the per-MB rate before you land.
