Why Ciqikou
Foreign visitors often want a personal Chinese seal but worry about tourist markups and not speaking Mandarin. Ciqikou concentrates craft and souvenir shops in a walkable, free old town on metro Line 1 — so you can compare a few stalls in one visit.
A name chop is not a booking ticket. There is no official reservation. Quality and asking prices vary stall-to-stall. The useful skill is process: confirm characters, agree the total, watch them carve, then pay.
We keep this English-only and practical. We do not invent a “best shop” ranking or a fixed fair price in yuan for Ciqikou — tourist streets change, and we did not stand at every counter with a price list this run.
How to spot a real carver
- Good signs: carver at a desk with knives/files; unfinished soapstone blanks; practice stamps on paper; you can watch the characters being cut.
- Weak signs: only machine-polished finished seals in plastic, no tools, “custom” that is just a sticker or laser print with no carving time.
- Studios vs ground stalls: one English shopping guide says proper studios in Ciqikou often keep fixed prices, while ground-floor stalls expect haggling. Either way, get the total in writing/translate before they start.
How to buy one
- Go to Ciqikou Ancient Town (磁器口古镇), Shapingba — CRT Line 1 to Ciqikou station. Enter the free streets; morning is usually quieter than weekend afternoons.
- Walk the main commercial street and duck into side alleys / upstairs studios. Look for a stall where someone is actually carving stone, with unfinished blanks and tools visible.
- Show on your phone: (1) your Latin name spelling, (2) preferred Chinese characters if you already have a Chinese name, or (3) pinyin plus “please suggest phonetic characters.” Confirm the exact characters and seal-script orientation before carving — that part cannot be undone.
- Ask for the total price for the stone you picked + carving (and whether red paste / a small pad is included). Type the number into a translator note or write it down. If the first ask feels high, smile, try one more stall, or leave.
- Wait while they carve (simple name seals are often finished in roughly 15–60 minutes on craft streets elsewhere in China; one Chongqing shopping guide reports ~15 minutes at a named Ciqikou studio — treat times as typical, not a guarantee). Check the characters and orientation, then pay (WeChat/Alipay common; small cash helps at tiny stalls).
- Optional backup the same trip or another day: around Huguang Guild Hall (湖广会馆) / Dongshuimen, tourism write-ups describe a restored craft street with live handicraft demos including stone carving. Still agree price before work starts.

Price without Chinese
Across China craft streets, travel guides commonly quote about ¥30–120 for a small–medium soapstone name chop, with better/larger stone often ¥150–400 (indicative ranges from a 2026 souvenirs guide — not a Ciqikou menu we photographed).
Ciqikou’s main street is tourist-facing. General souvenir tips for the town say gentle bargaining (often roughly 20–30% off a first ask) is common at non-fixed stalls. That is a process tip, not a promise you will land on any specific number.
Rule that always works without Chinese: no start until the total is agreed. If they start carving while still “discussing,” stop them. Walking away is normal.

Huguang / Dongshuimen backup
Huguang Guild Hall itself is a paid historic complex (tourism pages often list about ¥25 entry — confirm on the day). The useful craft note is the nearby Dongshui Post / Dongshuimen commercial street, described as hosting live demonstrations of local crafts including stone carving.
Treat this as a secondary option if Ciqikou is too crowded or you are already downtown by the river. We are not claiming it is cheaper or “more authentic” than Ciqikou — we did not run a side-by-side price survey.

More specific Guanyinqiao option (with stall photos): for a concrete creative-park stall pattern near Guanyinqiao, see How to find traditional hand-carved Chinese seals in Chongqing — Beicang Cultural & Creative Street (北仓文创街区), 现场定制 seal carving. Ciqikou remains the free ancient-town walk; Beicang is the photo-backed stall area.
Pitfalls
- Paying before characters are confirmed — wrong characters cannot be un-carved.
- Accepting the first shouted price without a total that includes stone + carving + paste.
- Buying a pre-made “name” seal that was not carved for you.
- Only shopping the densest main-street frontage at peak weekend hours — compare two or three places; mornings are easier.
- Expecting English menus or fixed published Ciqikou chop price lists — most stalls are cash/QR and conversation.

FAQ
Does Ciqikou have hand-carved name chops?
Yes. Craft and souvenir streets in the free ancient town commonly include seal/chop carving. Look for someone carving soapstone on site rather than only finished souvenirs.
Is Ciqikou free to enter?
Yes. The ancient town streets have no entry ticket. Individual small museums or activities inside may charge separately.
How do I know a fair price if I don’t speak Chinese?
Agree the full total (stone + carving, paste yes/no) before they start. Use a phone translator. Compare one or two stalls. Walk away if pressured. We do not publish a single “correct” Ciqikou yuan figure because we did not field-audit every stall this week.
What should typical soapstone chops cost?
Travel guides for China craft streets often cite about ¥30–120 for a small–medium soapstone name chop (indicative). Better stone costs more. Treat tourist-street asks as negotiable unless the shop says fixed price.
What do I show the carver?
Clear Latin spelling, preferred Chinese characters if you have them, or pinyin. Confirm the exact characters and orientation before carving.
How long does carving take?
Simple name seals are often finished in about 15–60 minutes on craft streets. One Chongqing shopping write-up reports about 15 minutes at a Ciqikou studio — allow more time on busy days.
Is Huguang Guild Hall better for chops?
Not necessarily. It is a useful secondary craft area (nearby Dongshuimen craft street with live demos). Ciqikou remains the primary, easy old-town stop for most visitors.
Can I book a chop online?
Not needed. This is an on-the-spot craft purchase, not a timed attraction ticket.
