Step-by-step booking guide

  1. 1

    Take the metro to Huangsha

Lines 1 and 6 stop at Huangsha Station; Exit F is closest. Walk across the footbridge onto the island.

  2. 2

    Walk Shamian Main Street

The central avenue and the riverside promenade link most of the historic buildings — no ticket needed.

  3. 3

See Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel

The cream-coloured Catholic chapel is the island's best-known building; interiors open around services.

  4. 4

    Finish on the Pearl River

Golden hour on the southern promenade is the classic time for photos.

Key pitfalls

  • Most historic buildings are offices or consulates and can only be seen from outside.
  • Churches are generally open to visitors only around service times.
  • Weekends bring crowds of wedding and influencer photographers — weekday mornings are quietest.
