The short version
- Reserve first, travel second. Entry is by real-name reservation for a time slot and a direction (which gate you enter from).
- Official channel: the Huangshan Tourism Official Platform mini-program (WeChat or Alipay). The committee tells visitors not to buy through unofficial channels.
- Bring the physical passport you booked with. It is scanned at the gate; a photo on your phone is not what they check.
- Cable cars, shuttle buses and Tiandu Peak are separate from the gate ticket.
- Lead time: at least 1 day normally; at least 3 days around public holidays such as 1–7 October.
Booking flow with a passport
- Decide your route first. The ticket is direction-specific. South Gate (Tangkou) leads to Yungu (back mountain) or Yuping (front mountain); North Gate leads to Taiping. Choose by where you will sleep and which cable car you want. See the cable-car table below.
- Open the official mini-program. In WeChat or Alipay search 黄山旅游官方平台 (Huangshan Tourism Official Platform). The scenic-area committee’s hotline is 0559-2590999 if the mini-program will not let you proceed.
- Register and add your passport. Choose passport as the document type and enter the number exactly as printed. Name and number must match the passport you will carry. Reports differ on whether a mainland (+86) phone number is required at registration: try with your foreign number, and if it fails go to the Trip.com / Klook route below.
- Pick park, date, entry direction and time slot. Arrive inside your slot; late arrivals can be turned away.
- Add the cable car and shuttle bus you need as their own line items (see below), and Tiandu Peak if you plan to climb it.
- Pay and screenshot the QR code. The gate checks the ID you booked with.
If you will enter the park more than once (for example you sleep on the mountain and come back in), the committee says to reserve the multiple-entry ticket on the platform after your first check-in; ticket windows no longer handle it.
Prices and what is separate
| Item | Main season (21 Jan–19 Dec 2026) | Winter |
|---|---|---|
| Park entrance (adult) | CNY 190 | CNY 150 |
| Yungu cable car (one way) | CNY 80 | CNY 65 |
| Taiping cable car (one way) | CNY 80 | CNY 65 |
| Yuping cable car (one way) | CNY 90 | CNY 75 |
| West Sea Canyon monorail (one way) | CNY 100 | CNY 80 |
| Shuttle bus Tangkou to cable-car base | about CNY 19 each way (traveller and OTA listings; confirm at checkout) | |
Prices come from the 2025–26 price policy published by Anhui Daily / the Huangshan government (winter: 20 Dec 2025–20 Jan 2026). The winter schedule for 2026–27 was not yet published when we checked, so treat the winter column as the last published one. Discounted and free categories exist (for example students and seniors, plus occasional promotions) and need valid ID and a matching ticket type. We could not verify any standing “foreigner half price”: one traveller blog reports paying 95 in September 2025, but the official 2026 policy lists half-price for defined groups, so do not budget for it.
Cable cars: Yungu, Yuping, Taiping
| Cable car | Side / gate | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Yungu | Back mountain, via South Gate and Yungu Temple | Shixin Peak, West Sea Canyon, Beihai area; common “up” for a one-day loop |
| Yuping | Front mountain, via South Gate and Ciguang Pavilion | Welcoming Pine, Tiandu and Lotus Peak area; common “down” for a one-day loop |
| Taiping | North Gate | Entering from the north side |
A popular one-day route is up Yungu, across the summit, then down Yuping (or the reverse). Hiking up instead of riding is possible from both sides and takes hours, so only do it if you are fit and start early. The scenic area also lists a fourth cable car, Donghai, for the East Gate: the 2026 holiday notice says there is no hiking trail between the East Gate and the Donghai upper station, so that cable car is the only way in or out on that side.
How far ahead, and peak days
- Official guidance: at least 1 day ahead normally, at least 3 days ahead around statutory holidays (committee notices, March and September 2026).
- Popular slots fill earlier. One news explainer suggests 3–7 days for hot slots; treat that as a rule of thumb, not an official rule.
- Golden Week (1–7 Oct 2026): the park opened 06:00–17:40 (06:30 on 1 and 7 Oct), the hiking entry gates stopped admitting at 15:00, and cable cars ran 06:00–17:40. May Day, summer weekends and autumn weekends are the other crowded periods.
- Cable-car hours (5 Mar–30 Nov 2026): 07:00–17:10 Monday–Friday and 06:30–17:40 on weekends and short holidays; 08:00–16:40 from 1 Dec to 4 Mar. Long holidays get their own notice.
- When the quota is full: the platform runs a waitlist. If someone refunds, waitlisted orders are matched in order; if not, you are refunded.
- Tiandu Peak needs its own real-name reservation and has limited capacity. It closes in thunder or high wind and, per the holiday notice, is for people with a reservation only (open 06:30–15:00 in Golden Week).
If the official mini-program will not take your passport
Many foreign visitors report friction with the Chinese-language mini-program. Two alternatives that list gate tickets in English with passport booking:
- Trip.com: Huangshan Scenic Area tickets — a recent r/travelchina poster reports booking the South Gate slot on Trip.com in April and then buying shuttle tickets separately.
- Klook: Huangshan Scenic Area — lists South Gate tickets (Yungu direction, Yuping direction), North Gate (Taiping direction) and separate cable-car tickets, about CNY 190 for the gate. The listing says confirmed within 48 hours, valid only on the selected date, non-refundable, so book at least two days out and be sure of your date.
The park’s own notice says to reserve on the official platform and to avoid non-official channels, and we cannot confirm how any reseller’s ticket is checked at the gate. If you use a reseller, pick the exact gate/direction, keep the confirmation, bring the passport you booked with, and have a plan B. Compare product titles and inclusions: some listings are one-day tours, not just admission. See also booking without a Chinese phone.
Walk-up purchase: some travel sites say you can buy at the South or North Gate service windows with your passport; others (and one 2026 explainer) say the park does not sell tickets on the spot and unreserved visitors may be refused. We could not settle this from official sources, so do not rely on it.
Sleeping on the summit
Hotels sit inside the scenic area, around Bright Summit (Guangming Ding), Beihai, Paiyun Pavilion and Baie Ridge areas. They are booked separately from the park ticket, travel guides report they sell out weeks ahead in autumn, and the committee asks that you reserve your gate ticket before booking a hotel inside the scenic area. The Huangshan Tourism platform lists hotels too; Trip.com and Klook list rooms as well. We did not verify a specific hotel’s cancellation terms, so read each before paying. A night on the mountain is the way to catch sunrise and the sea of clouds, but cloud and sunrise depend on weather and are never guaranteed.
What to bring and the gate
- The physical passport used for the booking, plus the QR or confirmation screenshot. The gate checks your ID.
- Reservation made for your name; a friend’s ticket will not scan for you.
- Non-slip shoes and a warm layer: one Trip.com route guide notes the summit is roughly 5–8 degrees C cooler than Tangkou.
- Water, snacks and a power bank. Food on the mountain is limited and priced for the setting.
- Offline map plus the official free guide mini-program Zhiyou Huangshan. For apps and payments see Alipay / WeChat Pay for tourists.
- Be at the South Gate transfer centre early; shuttle buses run from about 05:40–06:10 in holiday periods, and queues build quickly.
Failure fixes
| Problem | What to try |
|---|---|
| Mini-program asks for a +86 number or rejects the passport | Retry with the passport type selected and a different phone/OS; ask your hotel in Tunxi or Tangkou to reserve, or call 0559-2590999; or book via Trip.com / Klook (see above). |
| Sold out for your date | Join the platform waitlist, move a day, or switch gate/direction; read the on-screen quota notice for the date. |
| Name or passport number mismatch | The gate needs the same ID. Fix the order before the date; do not go to the mountain hoping staff will edit it. |
| Missed your time slot | Slots are enforced; late arrivals may be refused. Rebook an earlier slot next time and arrive at the transfer centre with margin. |
| Weather closes a peak (Tiandu) | It closes in thunder or high wind. Choose West Sea Canyon, Shixin Peak or another viewpoint, which the committee itself suggests. |
| Paid a stranger for a “guaranteed” slot | The committee warns against unofficial “grab” services; only the official platform or a clearly listed reseller product with a confirmation. |
If you cannot get in
- Try another date or an off-peak weekday. Winter is cheaper and quieter; check cable-car hours.
- Pick other scenic spots around Huangshan city, as the committee itself suggests for unreserved visitors. Villages such as Hongcun and Xidi are a day trip option; check their own ticket rules.

FAQ
Do foreigners need to reserve Huangshan in advance?
Yes. The scenic-area committee’s 2026 notices say Huangshan applies a “limited numbers, reservation, staggered peaks” rule with strong real-name, timed and direction-specific reservations, and ask visitors to reserve first and travel second: at least 1 day ahead, at least 3 days ahead around statutory holidays. Do not plan on turning up without a reservation.
Can I book with a passport?
Reservations are tied to the visitor’s ID and the gate checks the same ID. Several guides report that the official mini-program accepts a passport number and that you scan the same physical passport at the gate. Reports differ on whether a +86 phone number is needed to register, so test the mini-program early and keep Trip.com or Klook as a backup.
How much are the ticket and the cable cars?
Official 2026 price policy (21 Jan–19 Dec 2026): entrance CNY 190; Yungu and Taiping cable cars CNY 80 one way; Yuping cable car CNY 90; West Sea Canyon sightseeing monorail CNY 100. Winter prices are lower (entrance CNY 150, cable cars CNY 65/75, monorail CNY 80). Shuttle buses from the Tangkou transfer centre are about CNY 19 each way. Confirm at checkout.
Which cable car should I take?
Yungu (back mountain, from Yungu Temple) and Yuping (front mountain, from Ciguang Pavilion) both start from the South Gate side; Taiping serves the North Gate. For a one-day trip many visitors go up one and down the other. Pick the entry direction when you reserve, because the gate ticket is direction-specific.
Can I stay overnight on the summit?
Yes, but hotels on the mountain are booked separately and the official notice tells you to reserve your gate ticket before booking a hotel inside the scenic area. Travel guides say autumn rooms sell out weeks ahead, so plan the hotel and the ticket together and check each cancellation policy.
What if Huangshan is sold out for my date?
The platform can open a waitlist: when someone refunds, waitlisted orders are matched in order, and unmatched waitlist payments are refunded. Otherwise change the date, or visit other sights around Huangshan. The committee warns against paying anyone who promises a guaranteed slot.
