Shanghai Tower tickets for foreigners

Shanghai Tower’s Top of Shanghai Observatory (118F) is a separate ticket from Oriental Pearl. The observatory lists Trip.com among its official online channels — English booking, foreign cards, passport at the gate. Pick a dated 2-hour entry window; sunset slots sell first. This is not the Oriental Pearl non-mainland SKU.

Best foreigner path (Trip.com + passport)

  1. Open Trip.com: Top of Shanghai Observatory (Shanghai Tower).
  2. Choose your visit date and a 2-hour entry window. Sunset / early-evening slots go first on clear days — book a day or more ahead when you can.
  3. Enter each traveler’s passport name and number exactly as printed. Pay with a foreign card if offered.
  4. On the day: Metro Line 2 or 14 to Lujiazui, then ~500 m walk to the observatory entrance at the tower base (501 Yincheng Middle Road). Allow time for security.
  5. Show passport + e-ticket / entry code. Ride the high-speed lift to the 118th floor (about 546 m). Plan 1–1.5 hours at the top.

Official English overview of the observatory route (B1 exhibition, 118F deck, optional higher art space): en.shanghaitower.com (note the site’s own URL spelling). Inquiry line listed there: +86-21-8037-0150 (09:00–18:00).

Most first-timers pick one skyline ticket plus the Bund at ground level. Doing both on the same clear evening is possible but redundant if you only want “a view.”

Walk-up and Chinese apps

Payments & phone gotchas

Trip.com English checkout is the path that usually accepts foreign cards. If you also use Chinese OTAs, set up Alipay / WeChat Pay for tourists first. For attractions that force WeChat-only flows elsewhere on your trip, keep booking without a Chinese phone bookmarked.

Pitfalls: Buying Oriental Pearl by mistake (different product). Missing your 2-hour window. Passport name mismatch at security. Expecting Google Maps pins — use Amap/Apple Maps from Lujiazui. Assuming every aggregator quotes the same CNY 180 gate baseline (some resellers mark up — compare the product title and inclusions).

FAQ

Is Shanghai Tower the same ticket as Oriental Pearl?

No. Oriental Pearl uses Trip.com “Non-Chinese mainland nationality” sphere tickets; Shanghai Tower is a separate Top of Shanghai Observatory product with its own dated entry window. Buy both only if you want both views.

Can foreigners book online with a passport?

Yes. Trip.com is listed as an official sales channel. Enter passport details exactly; bring the same original passport for real-name entry.

How much is the ticket?

Common published adult price is about CNY 180 (students and 60+ about CNY 120; children 1.0–1.4 m about CNY 90; under 1.0 m free). Combo options that add higher floors (e.g. SKY632 / damper exhibition) cost more — confirm the live Trip.com SKU before paying.

What are the hours?

Typically 08:30–22:00 with last entry around 21:30. Always re-check your booking confirmation for the date you chose.

Do I need a Chinese phone or WeChat?

Not for the Trip.com path. WeChat / Meituan / Dianping are Chinese-app alternatives. If those fail, see our guides on booking without a Chinese phone and Alipay/WeChat Pay.
