Beijing layover: what you can actually see and book

With a daytime layover in Beijing, plan one big sight: the Forbidden City (plus Jingshan Park behind it) or the Great Wall. Not both. First make sure you are allowed to leave the airport, then book before you fly: Forbidden City tickets open at 20:00 Beijing time, 7 days ahead, with no same-day sales.

The short version

Can you leave the airport?

This decides everything, so settle it before booking a single ticket. The National Immigration Administration (NIA) lists two transit rules:

RuleWhoWhat it allows
24-hour visa-free transitAll nationalities, with an onward international ticket with a confirmed seatStay up to 24 hours without leaving the port's restricted area. To go out, you first need a temporary entry permit from the port's immigration authority.
240-hour visa-free transitNationals of 57 countries, ordinary passport, onward ticket to a third country or regionEnter through one of 65 designated ports and stay up to 10 days in the permitted areas.

Some passports also have separate (unilateral) visa-free entry, which is a different programme. Confirm your nationality, port and onward ticket on the NIA page or with your airline. This guide is a booking plan, not immigration advice. Details: 240-hour visa-free transit and attraction booking.

Which airport, and how long into town

Option A: Forbidden City + Jingshan Park

The classic layover plan, and the one that needs the most planning ahead.

  1. Check the day. The Palace Museum opens Tuesday to Sunday and is closed on Mondays (except national holidays).
  2. Book 7 days ahead at 20:00 Beijing time (12:00 UTC) on the official English site, bookingticket.dpm.org.cn. It signs foreigners in with an email code; no Chinese phone or WeChat needed. There are no same-day tickets.
  3. Choose the afternoon session if you land in the morning: afternoon check-in runs from 11:00 (the morning session's check-in closes at 12:00, and it sells out first).
  4. Mind last entry: 1 Apr–31 Oct open 08:30–17:00, last entry 16:00; 1 Nov–31 Mar open 08:30–16:30, last entry 15:30.
  5. Enter at the Meridian Gate (Wumen, south side) with the same passport. Tickets were listed at CNY 60 (Apr–Oct) and CNY 40 (Nov–Mar).
  6. Exit north and walk to Jingshan Park for the view back over the palace roofs. It is a gate purchase with your passport, CNY 2 (CNY 10 during exhibitions), open until 21:00 from April to October (last entry 20:30).

Adding Tiananmen Square

The square sits right in front of the palace, but it is a separate booking:

Option B: the Great Wall

A wall trip replaces the city plan; it is a long half day by itself.

Build your own timeline

Fill in your own numbers; these are the fixed limits we can source.

StepFixed limit / typical time

PEK → central BeijingOften 40–70 minutes (DiDi/taxi)
Forbidden CityLast entry 16:00 (Apr–Oct) / 15:30 (Nov–Mar); closed Mondays
Jingshan ParkOpen to 21:00 (Apr–Oct) / 20:00 (Nov–Mar)

If the Forbidden City's last entry is already out of reach once you add these up, switch to Jingshan Park and a hutong walk, which need no advance booking.

Book before you fly: checklist

Pitfalls: Assuming the 24-hour transit rule lets you leave the airport. Landing at PKX with a plan built around PEK. Planning the Forbidden City on a Monday or hoping for a same-day ticket. Trying to fit the palace, the square and the Great Wall into one afternoon. Treating a palace ticket as square entry. Forgetting that every booking is tied to the passport you carry.

Sources: National Immigration Administration English page on visa-free transit policies (24-hour and 240-hour rules, 57 countries, 65 ports), Palace Museum visit page (opening days, hours and last entry) and ticket notice (no same-day sales), Beijing municipal English page for the Badaling Great Wall (hours, prices, on-site purchase, 60 km northwest of Beijing), all read 12 Oct 2026; plus this site's verified pages for the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Mutianyu, Badaling, Jingshan Park and Beijing airports. FAQ

Can I leave Beijing airport during a layover without a visa?

Only if a visa-free route covers you. China's 24-hour transit exemption lets transit passengers stay without a visa only inside the port's restricted area; to go out you first need a temporary entry permit from the port's immigration authority. The 240-hour visa-free transit policy lets nationals of 57 countries enter through designated ports with an onward ticket to a third country or region. Some passports also have separate visa-free entry. Check the National Immigration Administration page for your passport and route.

Can I see the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and the Great Wall in one layover?

Not realistically in one daytime layover. The Forbidden City's last entry is 16:00 from April to October (15:30 from November to March), the Great Wall is a separate trip out of the city, and Tiananmen Square needs its own reservation. Pick the Forbidden City area or the Great Wall.

Can I buy a Forbidden City ticket on the day?

No. The Palace Museum does not sell same-day tickets. Book on the official English site, which opens each date at 20:00 Beijing time seven days before, and bring the same passport. It is closed on Mondays except national holidays.

Do I need a reservation for Tiananmen Square?

Yes. Entry is free, but you need a real-name reservation 1 to 7 days ahead, and new dates open at 12:00 Beijing time. Walk-ups without a reservation are routinely refused, and a Forbidden City ticket is not a reliable substitute.

Which Great Wall section is better for a layover?

Badaling is the closer and busier one; Beijing's official page puts it 60 km northwest of the city and says tickets can be bought on site (foreign visitors commonly book via Trip.com). Mutianyu is quieter and has its own English booking site, bookable up to 15 days ahead. Either is a long half day.

My layover lands on a Monday. What can I do?

The Forbidden City is closed on Mondays (except national holidays). Go for the Great Wall, or walk Jingshan Park, which is open daily and sold at the gate with a passport (CNY 2).
